What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing Explained

Digital marketing is a type of marketing that provides advertising on electronic devices or digital channels on the Internet. Digital channels refer to the search engine (e.g. Google, Bing), social media (e.g. Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter), emails, and mobile applications.

We can do Digital marketing online or offline, but in both cases, we need comprehensive digital marketing strategies.

How does digital marketing work?

Digital marketing uses a variety of strategies to achieve one main goal in different ways.

All digital marketing strategies work together to drive traffic, drive awareness, and turn visitors into loyal business customers. Let’s take a closer look at key digital marketing strategies.

Here is an overview of just five major categories of online marketing:

  1. Search Engine Optimization(SEO)
  2. Search Engine Marketing(SEM)
  3. Content Marketing
  4. Social Media Marketing(SSM)
  5. Affiliate Marketing

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is a basic of Digital Marketing. You must know about SEO if you want to become a digital marketer.

If your website does not search engine-friendly, you're not gonna show up in any search results. How do you fix that? - The answer is SEO. SEO is all the free things that you can do to make your site more appealing to search engines, as well as rank higher. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is the process of improving a Website's Ranking in Search Engine Results.

There are three things to consider when you think of SEO: quality, quantity, and organic.

Let's break it down. - The first thing is quality. You want the right traffic coming to your website. Now, if you were selling dog food, you wouldn't want people coming to your site for hammers. And now that you're getting the quality, you wanna get the quantity. You want a lot of people to come to your site, and you can do that very easily with SEO. SEO means free organic traffic. Now that you know what SEO is, you might wanna do a search on your business and see where you rank. - And it might be worth it to check out your competitors, as well. It's important that your site is appealing to customers, as well as search engines; that's the art of SEO. - Now, it takes time and patience, but it's totally worth it.

Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing is one of the key parts of digital marketing.

If I attend calendar events like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, I could spend a lot of marketing budget months in advance for those two calendar events. However, with an AdWords budget, we can focus more on time, so we attract all the customers who are looking for those specific keywords.

You are probably already familiar with search engine marketing, even if you don’t know how it works. Let's say you're looking for words similar to "Wedding Photos." You will get many options on the search engine results page.

The links you see in the main part of the page are called natural results. It costs nothing to show up there. Search engines show the sites they think have the most relevant content.

Search Engine Ads

You may have seen search results preceded by [Ad].

Well, those entries are paid advertising. With SEM, you can use those locations to advertise to potential customers when they search for certain words and phrases that are relevant to your business.

Another really unique thing to know about SEM is that the advertiser only pays when someone clicks on his ad. So if your ad appears but no one clicks on it, you won't be charged. Yes, everything you heard right. That's why it's called pay-per-click advertising. Let's say you're a wedding photographer. You want your ads to show when someone searches for 'Wedding Photographer Cardiff.' But you only pay when a searcher clicks on your ad. This is a big difference compared to SEM with traditional forms of advertising such as newspaper and magazine ads.

If you promote wedding photography with them, your ad will appear to many people, whether they want wedding photography or not, and you pay for it. With SEM, it's very likely that people will be interested in what you have to offer when they click on your ad because they told you that, to be more precise, they told the search engine when they searched for "Wedding Photographer Cardiff." They saw your ad and clicked on it. Unlike traditional marketing, SEM is for people who are actively looking for products and services. This is different from broadcasting a message to people who may not be interested in it. Does it make sense right? Well, now you know how SEO works so well. Let's summarize.

Search Engine Marketing is a unique powerful choice for your business. People search for things they want and advertisers target specific searches but only pay when someone clicks to learn more. That's Search Engine Marketing.

3. Content Marketing

Yes, Content marketing is also a part of Digital Marketing.

  Content Marketing Explained

Content marketing is blogging, its e-book is a podcast, its videos, it's anything you can realistically consume. On a more philosophical level, it really comes down to providing free or additional value to your target users or the users you already have.

One of my favorite examples of content marketing is infographics because it combines text and visuals to create a story, to tell a story. For example, if you post infographics on social media or send an explosion in an email. Email and it becomes viral, there are only so many ways you can generate more blog views, landing page views, and the like to establish a more credible, experience, thought leadership, and ultimately leading and sales.

What does Content Do?

I think the content does three main things.

It provides inspiration, provides information, is fun, and will always coincide. Each of them plays a very important role in helping someone solve one of these individual pain points that contribute to the overall problem that the product actually solves.

If it is new information, perhaps it provides a piece of new information that allows them to make an informed decision. Perhaps this reasonable decision is the product itself. If it’s an inspiration, maybe it shows them what they can do when they actually remove that pain with that new information, and of course, it has to be fun because our eyeballs are distracted and our brains are distracted everywhere and we need something it will keep our eyes on.

A lot of people think, "Okay, I'll publish this blog in great quality, it's a great story, great information, and then everyone will find it online." It doesn't work that way. You have to allow people to share, you have distributed it on social networks or other distribution platforms, and you can choose from several, both paid and natural.

So, you need to make sure that the content is distributed so that people can find and find it. No matter where you use your content, it’s important to know how it works and why it works. If you look at the redirect rate, traffic, or any other way, it will be a very different measurement than trying to maintain retention and how your existing users engage with the content you already have.

If marketers define their content success metrics, their KPIs in a more specific way, they will actually be able to gauge what success they are looking for.

4. Social Media Marketing(SMM)

Social Media Marketing

There are different types of digital marketing, and Social Media Marketing (SMM) is one of them and it is also known as Social Media 101.

Social media marketing (SMM) means using social media platforms to connect with the right audience to help build your brand. By using social media marketing, you can increase your sales and drive traffic to your website.

Typically, people use large social platforms for social media marketing.

Some popular and large audience social platforms include Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest.

What Is Inbound Marketing?

I think Digital Marketing is incomplete without Inbound Marketing. So I put it in this article too.

Inbound marketing is a new strategy where marketers focus on content creation. Whether it’s blog posts, emails, e-Books, or podcasts that engage shoppers or prospective shoppers into your brand.

So, creating valuable content that cares about people attracts them more than the other way around.

Inbound marketing is probably one of the best types of marketing or digital marketing that you can do for your evergreen.

I think most marketing teams today should devote the majority of their time to Inbound Marketing teams because it’s really a battlefield involving companies that compete for attention and let the best content win, right?

One thing everyone needs to think about when thinking about inbound marketing is who the inbound marketing is directed to and that it should be as specific as possible.

If you develop an inbound marketing strategy that targets a very specific target user, person, audience, or any word, then you will have more chances of being successful because you will be able to address their specific issues in a more accurate way.
